Whale and Iceberg Tour of St. Lewis Sound

A spectacular whale sighting in the St. Lewis Sound.

In summer, along the coast of Labrador, spectacular icebergs from the north meet frolicking whales and dolphins from the south. Join us as we search for colossal icebergs carved from the ancient Greenland glaciers that drift into St. Lewis Sound. In their presence you can feel the cold arctic air and smell the pristine glacial waters as they glisten magically in the summer sun. Watch for mighty humpback whales as they leap from the waters of St. Lewis Sound, and keep an eye peeled for the elusive little minke whale. Dolphins frolic in the wake of the boat and every so often a pod of orcas can be seen as they stalk their prey.

Historical Tour Around the Bay

Historic St. James Church, Battle Harbour, Labrador

Take a boat tour with us around St. Lewis Sound and learn the history, geography and culture of this very unique corner of Labrador. Our tour starts at Mary’s Harbour, a community established by the International Grenfell Association in 1930, and takes you through Caribou Run, a picturesque passage through the islands of St. Lewis Sound. Here you will find an abandoned fishing village called Indian Cove, the remains of an early 20th-century whaling station at Antill Cove, and the most easterly point in mainland North America at Cape Charles. En route to Battle Harbour we pass White Point, the site of a former US Coast Guard Loran A navigation system, and the 1905 lighthouse on Double Island. After a stop to explore historic Battle Harbour, we return to Mary’s Harbour via the former fishing villages of Trap Cove and Matthew’s Cove.

Come ashore with us at Murray’s Harbour for a walk around the abandoned community and a mug-up on the beach.
